Ayurveda is the oldest continuously practiced medicine on Earth, having originated in India some 5,000 years ago.  Ayurveda recognizes the universe as composed of five elements: ether, air, fire, water and earth.  We as humans are also comprised of these elements which, in our bodies, constitute the three primary Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.  When in balance, the Doshas maintain and harmonize the systems of the body — but when one or more Dosha increase due (primarily) to diet and lifestyle habits, they create imbalance which leads to illness.

Ayurveda focuses on living in harmony with nature, syncing our daily and seasonal routines with those of the Earth.  By doing so we harmonize the rhythm of the Doshas so that our bodies function at their optimum level–the level at which nature intends for us to function.  Moreover, Ayurveda is wholly individualized: your current psychological, emotional and physical state is the place we start from when creating a unique diet and lifestyle plan to help you thrive.

Whether you’re already in robust health — Ayurveda has always focused first and foremost on addressing imbalances before they lead to illness — or suffering with health issues such as allergies, insomnia, indigestion, chronic pain — Ayurveda has tools that can help.

How will we work together in service to your radiant health? 

First we begin with an in-person consultation to discuss your Prakrti (the Doshic constitution with which you were born) and your Vikrti (your current imbalance).  Expect lots of questions about the foods you’re eating now, your daily routine, the quality of your digestion, how well you’re sleeping and more.  At the end of our session I’ll furnish a custom plan built around food, spices, herbs and daily & seasonal practices designed to bring you back to balance and to restore health.

What kinds of health issues can Ayurveda help with?

Ayurveda has for thousands of years been relied on to treat hundreds of various diseases. My scope of practice as an Ayurvedic Health Counselor is limited to diet and lifestyle recommendations. It’s very likely I can help you overcome either new or chronic complaints that range from anxiety and depression to allergies, high blood pressure/hypertension, indigestion, insomnia, chronic pain and more. I’ll help you understand not only your present state of imbalance but the specific qualities of elevated Dosha that are driving your symptoms, and how we can employ Ayurveda’s law of “opposites balance” to restore balance and, by extension, health.

Are you a doctor?

No. I’m neither a doctor nor a licensed medical practitioner and I cannot diagnose, treat or prescribe medications for any kind of disease. What I can do, however, is assess your present state of health and current imbalance(s) through the lens of Ayurveda and the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and make sound recommendations for how to restore harmony to any or all Doshas that are currently imbalanced. It is very likely that by doing so we will achieve a reduction in symptoms—and in some cases a resolution—of symptoms tied to myriad health issues.

What if I generally feel pretty good but am just curious about what Ayurveda can offer me?

If you’re in good health now: excellent! Ayurveda has always emphasized preventative medicine as it’s much easier to correct Doshic imbalances before they lead to pathology. Even if you’re in excellent health there are daily and seasonal habits—as well as foods, herbs and spices—that you may employ to optimize your overall wellbeing.

Where do we meet? Can we do virtual consultations?

In-person appointments will take place at my home office located at 31 Jamaica Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130.

We can also meet virtually!  Most of the ground we’ll cover during the intake session involves a detailed health history, an exploration of your chief complaint(s), assessment of your Doshic constitution (Prakrti) and present state of imbalance (Vikrti).  This will help me formulate optimal diet and lifestyle recommendations to put you back on the path toward radiant health.  Skype is an effective communications channel for this exploration and you can select that option upon booking your initial consult and/or your follow-up sessions.  I do not offer virtual private Yoga sessions at this time.
